The Bureau of Information Processing is responsible for supporting the Department’s technology needs. We seek to provide cost-effective, scalable, and functional technology services to support the engineering community of IDOT, research and administration. Our approach focuses on being responsive, open-minded, and accountable using unique and adaptable designs to meet both the enterprise and individual needs of users. The Information Technology infrastructure of the Department of Transportation is the foundation from which we plan and build safe roads in Illinois. The well being and vitality of this infrastructure is essential in order for the Department’s staff to appropriately plan, design and build effective highways and manage traffic in Illinois. The future of transportation will depend heavily on the use of technology. Current Projects ___________________________________________ I39 Fiber Project IDOT has completed the installation of Fiber Optic Cabling along the Interstate 39 corridor between Rochelle and Rockford which will enable the city of Rochelle and others to sell Internet Broadband service to their municipal households. E-Bids & EPlans This initiative provides the Department with the ability to receive bids and plan drawings electronically. This project will allow the Plans to remain in electronic format from planning to letting. Business Continuity Program Development Develop a plan for Business Continuity for the Department in the event of a catastrophe at the IDOT Headquarters/Central Office or Annex Buildings. Commercial Oversize Overweight Truck Permits Implement and operate a Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks (CVISN) compliant Commercial Vehicle Information Window (CVIEW) with a legacy system interface for importing Illinois permitting data from the Oversize and Overweight System. The CVIEW will be procured through the RFP process and will be hosted by the vendor. Interfaces for International Registration Plan carrier and vehicle data, International Fuel Tax Agreement carrier data and Single State Registration System carrier data will be included in the system but not implemented. Mainframe System Rewrites The Department is converting several mainframe systems to a client server application that is more user-friendly. Conversion of these systems to new platforms creates more stable systems, and allows our legacy systems to become rejuvenated and continue to be core to the Department in the 21st century. Data Marts As a part of the Enterprise Data Warehouse initiative, the Department is developing several data marts. The goal of this project is to provide Business Users with easy, direct access to information. This is an initiative to break down the “silos” surrounding the massive amounts of data maintained by the various mainframe systems. This project will analyze the data throughout the Department and sew it together in a way that provides cross-functional value. Business Users will be provided with robust, easy to use, feature-rich toolsets which will allow them to get to the information they need to make better business decisions. Business Intelligence The Data Mart initiative has spawned another endeavor in Business Intelligence. IDOT’s vision has sought to free up its IT team by giving employees direct access to information. Early attempts involved building custom dashboards from scratch, but this approach failed to scale well. Accordingly, IDOT sought to implement a comprehensive business intelligence (BI) platform—a one-stop information shop -- upon which additional dashboards and user-friendly information portals might be quickly implemented. In Microsoft Office Performance Point™ Server 2007, SQL Server® 2005, and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, IDOT found a solution its users could easily use at a price that it could afford. Business Analyst Program This project will result in a comprehensive, tailored business analyst training and certification program that will provide business analysts with essential skills needed for successful implementation of projects and software applications. This project will be divided into four phases which include: Development of BA Training Materials, tailored to IDOT culture, solicit involvement from other agencies, making training and certification available for all BIP and IDOT staff, soliciting CMS involvement and making adjustments to accommodate CMS needs. Road Construction Update This project provides a data input application to provide end users with more detail and more readily obtainable construction information. Illinois Department of Transportation External Collaboration This project provides a secure, comprehensive and easy access to confidential information, for our external stakeholders. By providing information access, IDOT stakeholders will be more prepared to apply to state and federal funding opportunities. Illinois Highway Information System 2010 The objective of this project is to develop a version of a roadway inventory system on a different platform that can provide an efficient means to store transportation-related data elements that will facilitate the transportation modeling processes, provide better planning capabilities, and help make sound transportation decisions regarding safety, engineering, and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) mandates. Maintenance Management Information System Emulator This project addresses the need to upgrade current hardware and increase user productivity. The installation of the Charon-Vax/XL Plus emulator will provide a stable environment for our MMI System on a new Windows server, and reduce response time for the users exponentially. Motor Fuel Tax The primary objective of this project is to rewrite the existing Motor Fuel Tax system to address new requirements and utilize modern technology for increased user productivity. The MFT system supports the allocation and distribution of Motor Fuel Tax monies of over $600 million annually to approximately 3,375 entitled entities throughout the State on a monthly basis and also tracks projects containing Federal funds and State Match monies and Motor Fuel tax monies. Windows Program Planning System The primary objective of this project is to rewrite the existing legacy mainframe Program Planning System to address new functionality and utilize modern technology for increased user productivity. The primary purpose of PPS is to manage the state's $9.15 Billion Multi-Year Highway program. This consists of approximately 10,000 highway projects consisting of improvements for 4,518 highway miles and 925 structures. The system also facilitates the creation of the "For The Record" report which is a legislative mandated report that details project accomplishments over the prior year. Some of the additional objectives are: • Gain quicker, more detailed and more accurate analysis of roadways. • Establish the ability to automate executive approval of all project changes and balance the program. • Manage existing Road Systems. • Provide the capability to use GIS mapping and video views of roadway and structures • Provide advanced decision support information to IDOT utilizing advanced Business Intelligence technologies. • Increase usability and reduce training costs.
