Current and Proposed Organizational Activities

A. MACH2 – Machine Assisted Construction of Highways 2 (Machine Control) is underway after limited success of the MACH1 pilot. The MDOT CORS is being used by the inspectors running Bentley Onsite.  Hopes are that the contractors Topcon equipment will also run off the CORS.

B. Bentley OnSite – As part of the MACH2 project have been working with Leica and Bentley to improve the functionality of OnSite.  By partnering we have successfully eliminated all wires by using a tablet PC as the GPS controller with Bluetooth to the Leica receiver.  We have also eliminated the latency that existed by sending adjusted coordinates from the Leica receiver instead of having OnSite calculate corrections from raw coordinates.

C. LAMP Legacy Application Migration Project – MDOT’s largest project is to migrate all legacy client server applications to .Net web applications.  There are reportedly 253 applications that have been developed by MDOT over the years.  Efforts are underway to combine functionality and use web serves for common functionality.

Infrastructure

A.  ProjectWise – Expanding the use of ProjectWise to use workflows and states for all reviews and submittals (Base Plan, Grade Inspection, Final Plans, ROW plans and Letting plans).  Local Agencies projects are currently piloting the use of ProjectWise eProposal that will be mandatory this fall.  Documents are published on the web from PDF files stored in ProjectWise. Have added ProjectWise solutions for Fleet, Special Provision Process, Notice to Bidders, and working on Consultant contract workflows.  Experimenting with Adobe Commenting for plan reviews and omission & errors meetings. Experimenting with state changes placing and deleting files on an ftp site.

B.  MDOT CORS - Continuously Operating Reference Station is a network of 85 GPS stations with 4 more planned for the near future. The system is free for public use.  The farming community has begun to use the system for agricultural purposes. The system uses mainly Leica hardware and software.  Agreements with other organizations have allowed for partnering to include their GPS with the MDOT CORS network.

New Applications (Just Completed, In Progress, or Preparing to Start)

A.  Microstation XM –
Looking to move to XM on the hopes of using the new GEOPAK Roadway Designer that will be ported over from InRoads.  We are considering only upgrading GEOPAK users to XM and waiting for MicroStation Athens before upgrading general users.

B. AASHTOWare TurboRelocation – MDOT will be one of the 12 states to invest $90K to participate in the development of TurboRelocation.  The software will be similar to TurboTax in that it will prompt the user with questions.  The software will then determine and calculate relocation assistance snd benefits in conformance with the Uniform Act.

C. FieldManager Rewrite - AASHTO and MDOT are currently establishing requirements to rewrite and combine three AASHTO systems into one application on the web. These three systems are FieldManager, Construction Administration System (CAS), and SiteManager. FieldManager and SiteManager are currently being used by several DOTs to manage construction data in the field.  CAS is a central office module that communicates with FieldManager.  FieldManager is being used by four DOTs and hundreds of locals, consultants and road/bridge/railroad/airport construction contractors in some 14 states.  FieldManager saves the taxpayers of Michigan in excess of $28.5 million annually through efficiencies gained from reduced hands-on time.
