CURRENT AND PROPOSED
ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Virginia Information Technology Agency: Initiated
by Governor Warner and the State Information Technology Officer, a
new IT strategic Plan was developed to place all IT (or at least most
all) positions under the new state agency. The VA Department of
Information Technology and the VA. Department of Technology Planning
was eliminated effective July 1, 2003 and a new Virginia Information
Technology Agency was created to cover most all IT functions for all
state agencies. IT Operations Sections of all state agencies was
merged into the new VITA on January 2005. The new agency was
responsible for all IT procurements and for all IT operations. One of
the few exceptions was programs/projects that apply only to a single
agency remained with that agency. For instance, The CADD Support IT
positions remained with VDOT. The goal is to save money by
eliminating duplication of programming efforts, procurement, Server
support, and networking.
Initiated by Governor Warner and carried threw by
Governor Tim Kaine and the State Information Technology Officer,
a new IT strategic Plan was developed to
outsource all IT (or at least most all) positions. Northrop Grumman
won the contract and the switch over took place on July 1, 2006.
INFRASTRUCTURE (DESKTOP,
NETWORKING, SERVER/STORAGE/ETC.)
In the
area of Cadd VDOT recently purchase 2 IBM 3600 series servers with 4
Zeon processors to replace the aging Compaq server. This was done to
accommodate the needs of this area for speed and reliability. Here
is a diagram of the layout of the servers and applications.
VDOT is currently uses Windows Server
2000 and 2003 and the workstations use Windows XP. VDOT will be
evaluating Windows Vista, but has no immediate plans to implement the
OS.
Northrop Grumman along with Vita is
in process of Building New Server Facilities in two areas of the
state to consolidate all the servers for the state to these new
locations.
NEW SYSTEMS (JUST
COMPLETED, IN PROGRESS, OR PREPARING TO START)
MicroStation
-
VDOT has completed the
migration to V8 (2004 Edition) with the exception of files that have
remained in VDOT old design software IGrds. We have set date of
August 2007 that when meet we will remove the Old Version of
Microstation. All workstations used in the development of Plans,
Specifications, and Estimates have successfully transitioned to V8.
MicroStation (08.05.02.55), Descartes (08.05.02.35) have all proved
to be stable platforms. VDOT is now moving towards SELECTserver XM
and further evaluations of the XM product line.
GEOPAK
- VDOT is currently using
GEOPAK 2004 Edition (08.05.02.51). We are presently evaluating
GEOPAK 8.8 (08.08.02.73) and will be migrating to GEOPAK
(08.08.02.73) in the next month. VDOT uses the Road, Drainage, Site,
Bridge, and Survey modules. We are presently evaluating GEOPAK XM as
products become available.
Carlson Data Collection Software
- VDOT has recently switched from our in house written
survey package to Carlson software and data collectors to collect
survey data. We also are using Carlson Software for some construction
staking. VDOT is currently working on procedures to accomplish all
desired tasks in the area of stake out.
CAiCE - VDOT is currently
phasing out CAiCE Visual Transportation.
IGrds - VDOT is currently
phasing out IGrds.
Falcon - VDOT is currently
using Falcon DMS (Document Management System, Falcon SVP (Web Version
– Search, View, Print), and Falcon Enterprise (Web Version –
Post, Check out/in). Falcon DMS is used to manage all cadd drawings
and plan file room documents. Falcon SVP is used to enable Plan File
Room to be available through the web for searching and printing.
Falcon Enterprise is used to allow electronic plans to be available
to the contractors through the web and to allow the consultants to
post, check out, and in files threw the firewall. VDOT has also set
up other environments for purpose of store all project correspondents
and other project related documents.
Aperture Card Scanning - VDOT
is currently in the process of scanning aperture cards and adding
them to our plan file library (approximately seven million). VDOT has
least two Wicks and Wilson CS750 scanners and have contracted TSAdvet
to create a process that will automatically store theses files in
Falcon also at the same time it will populate fields in the falcon
database with import information about the files.
INFORMATION WANTED
VDOT is interested in what other
transportation agencies are implementing or considering in the areas
of digital signatures and design to construction.
