New Systems (Just Completed, In Progress, or Preparing to Start)

Enterprise Content Management System (ECMS)
-  NYSDOT is starting an initiative to implement an Enterprise Content Management System, which will be used to capture, manage, store, preserve, and deliver content related to organizational processes across the Department. The scope of the initial phase of this initiative is to determine Department-wide business requirements, select a vendor, install the required hardware and software, and execute pilot projects that focus on previously identified high-priority content management needs (document, records, and email management). In subsequent phases the high-priority components will be implemented across the Department and lower-priority content management needs and interactions with other Departmental systems will also be addressed.

Construction Seat Management Initiative
- A contract has been awarded to IBM, which provides for all construction field offices (approximately 400 offices and 1,600 inspection staff) to have a comprehensive computing infrastructure including: High speed WAN internet connection via broadband, DSL, satellite, cellular, etc.Networked field office LAN with computers, printers, plotters, scanners, data backup, etc.On-line, secure, web-based product ordering/asset management systemHelp desk services.  All computers will have the same software, updates and capabilities.   All construction contracts should be under CSMIN by summer of 2007.
Trns•Port SiteManager - NYSDOT’s SiteManager implementation has entered its third year of development.  Both the Construction and Materials components of SiteManager are planned to be used in NY.  SiteManager’s generic material related functionality has been put into production in 2007 along with a new integrated laboratory information management system (LIMS).  The new LIMS customization will be used to support the business processes for several Main Office labs in 2007.  In 2008, the Department will bring SiteManager Materials and the LIMS customization to Regional labs and begin pilot projects for SiteManager Construction at field locations.  For 2009, NYSDOT plans to continue expanding the use of SiteManager Construction, SiteManager Materials, and the new LIMS at project and office locations statewide.

Major Engineering Technology Related Topics at NYSDOT:

U.S. Customary Conversion: NYSDOT conversion to U.S. Customary units from the Metric System is underway.   NYSDOT has developed a detailed conversion plan, and is working on the conversion of major systems, CADD/Trns*port, etc.  U.S. Customary CADD configurations are nearly complete and it is anticipated mapping in U.S. Customary will begin in Fall 2007.

Development of CADD/Engineering Technology Training Program: NYSDOT continues to work on employee development/training and educational activities for new and existing staff as it relates to CADD and Engineering Technology.  Key aspects of NYSDOT’s training plan include:

• Working with subject matter experts to develop training material.
• Comprehensive/customizable course curriculum of half day classes.
• Development of individual Regional Training Plans for each of NYSDOT’s 11 Regional offices based on needs.
• Monitoring user skills through an annual skills survey.
• Training courses developed specifically for new hires.
• Specialty training for different disciplines (Structures, Construction, Survey, ROW).
• Making Professional Development credits available for course attendance.

CADD/Engineering Applications Software Deployments/Upgrades :

Bentley Systems ProjectWise/Microstation/InRoads
:

NYSDOT is in the planning stages of the migration to ProjectWise/MicroStation/InRoads Version XM.  The upgrade has begun with an upgrade to InterPlot XM (servers in May/June 07 and clients in July/August 07). Next, as a part of the overall XM upgrade, the ProjectWise System will be migrated to the XM version (target completion November 2007).  In the spring of 2008 CADD Clients (MicroStation/InRoads) will be upgraded to the XM version of software.

A group of “early adopters” for InRoads XM has been established.  This group consist of NYSDOT’s most advanced production InRoads users.  This group will assist in developing training material and standard templates/components which will be used in the production roll out in spring of 2008.

VISSIM:

NYSDOT is in the process of upgrading its current version of VISSIM to version 4.3.  VISSIM has been used extensively over the last year by the Department’s Roundabout Design Unit to model and display roundabout intersections.   However, the software can be used to model any number of complex unsignalized or signalized networks and other significant areas of interest to NYSDOT, such as modeling complex MPT schemes.  VISSIM is a microscopic, time step and behavior-based simulation model that visually displays 3D traffic flow for analysis and public information purposes.

Synchro & SimTraffic:

NYSDOT is in the planning stages to upgrade its current version of Synchro & SimTraffic to version 7.0.  NYSDOT engineers use Synchro to analyze/optimize traffic signal timings, coordinated systems and actuated signals.  Synchro & SimTraffic version 7.0 features improved logic for multi-lane roundabouts as well as arterials.

SIDRA:

NYSDOT is also in the planning stages to purchase several licenses of SIDRA Intersection version 3.  SIDRA is an advanced micro-analytical traffic evaluation tool for the assessment of alternative intersection treatments, roundabouts in particular.  NYSDOT engineers will be able to use SIDRA Intersection to predict capacity during heavy flow conditions for multi-lane roundabouts with uneven approach demands based on lane by lane model.

HydroCAD:

HydroCAD version 8.0 was successfully deployed to all NYSDOT Regional Offices.  HydroCAD is a windows-based application used for modeling the hydrology and hydraulics of stormwater runoff.

Design to Construction Technology Transfer:

A ProjectWise Connection Server will be added to the ProjectWise system to allow remote field office users’ (Construction Inspection staff) access to ProjectWise’s thick client, target date Fall 2007.

The following is a tentative summary list of the future NYSDOT projects that are targeted to incorporate machine controlled grading technology and/or the Bentley Onsite software during the Construction phase.
